Carnival glass is very distinctive glassware which dates back to the early 1900s. It was originally produced by Fenton in 1907 and became extremely popular and is still produced today. It has a wonderful iridescent finish and usually has a heavy molded pattern. The glass is pressed in a mold and then given its characteristic iridescence by a process of spraying with liquid metallic salts. It is a mixture of this wonderful oily finish and the distinctive carnival glass patterns that make the pieces stand out.
Whilst Fenton was making the functional, yet decorative, pieces of carnival glass, he produced around 150 patterns. Once other glass companies realized the popularity of the glassware and started to manufacture their own carnival glass they would have their own catalog of patterns. At this point, identification of the origin of pieces was quite straightforward as each producer had their own carnival glass patterns.
However, as the popularity rose still further there were many companies who would keep an eye on what their competitors were producing and if they thought that a pattern was selling particularly well they may copy some aspect of it and incorporate it into their own pieces. As time has gone by, identification has become a much more difficult process. As the glassware was not expensive it was rare for a manufacturer to have a signature on the base of the pieces, although some of the larger companies did use some form of marking. In many cases, however, there is only the carnival glass patterns and paint coloring that can be used to source the items. There are now probably more than 2000 different patterns.
There were originally five major producers and each would have their trademark carnival glass patterns. These big five were; Fenton, Imperial Glass Company, Millersburg Glass Company, Northwood Glass Company and Dugan Glass Company. Specialist collectors would no doubt be able to tell which manufacturer a piece was from if it were produced by one of these five. There were, however, quite a number of smaller companies throughout Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and West Virginia and then more companies still who would produce the glass. This is when identification becomes tricky.
Many of the traditional carnival glass patterns would be available from nearly all the manufacturers. For example the 'peacock at urn' pattern, this was produced by Millersburg, Northwood and Fenton and all are very similar to the untrained eye. However, a specialist would easily be able to tell which piece belongs to which company by way of the number of tiaras on the peacock, whether there was a bee in the picture, the style of the urn etc.
Whether you get completely caught up on the identification of the companies or not, looking at carnival glass patterns can become absolutely addictive. The depth of color and iridescence is stunning and the designs are extravagant and mesmerizing. They are definitely worth looking out for at flea markets and sales. You could find a lovely piece of glassware and never know it; the piece may even be worth quite a large sum of money.
